SLAG - Simple Little Audio Gadget
SLAG is a free music-playing sidebar gadget for Windows Vista and Windows 7.
It uses playlists created in Windows Media Player.
Download it:
Right-click the link, and save the file. The file you download should be named
slag.gadget. Then double-click to install and display on your desktop. For best results, Windows Media Player 11 or 12 should be installed on your
system.
Features:
- Plays random tracks from your Windows Media Player database. You can
"play all," or select a pre-defined playlist.
- Small, compact, and no-frills -- but not too ugly.
- Display album art, with cool transitions. Or, display animated
visualizations. Click the red dot in the lower right corner to toggle.
- Specify the text to display at the top: The artist, the title, the
album, the playlist -- or whatever text you prefer.
- Click the album cover (or visualization), and the gadget expands in size
to display details about the current track.
- The details panel includes a link to open the directory that contains the current
track.
- The details panel also includes a link to search Google for the current
artist.
- Two color schemes! Choose dark or light.
- Adjust the volume with your mouse wheel.
- Drag a music file into the gadget to play it instantly.
Version 1.1 changes:
- Vastly improved drag-and-drop: You can now drag more than one file
(including complete directories) into the gadget. Up to 500 tracks.
- New option to display artist, title, and album name at the top --
alternating every five seconds.
Version 1.2 changes:
- Bug fix. When non-library files are dragged into the gadget, the artist
name might have been missing. Not any more.
- Fixed display problems when using the "large font" option in Windows.
- The progress bar is now clickable, so you can change the position of the
current track (e.g., skip the middle).
- In the details panel, I added an option to search for the artist using
Bing (in addition to Google).
- Lengthy text at the top is no longer rudely cut off. It now appears with
an ellipsis at the end.
- Added a small meter display for the volume, instead of a number.
- Made some new buttons for the player controls.
That's about it. It's just a basic music player gadget -- but better than any
other gadget I've found.
